Haven’t you always wondered how the tree care industry came about? If you love history like I do you’ll find their story fascinating!

Note: all information was copied from the ISA website to be sure no misinformation was shared.

The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) has served the tree care industry for nearly 100 years as a scientific and educational organization.

ISA was founded in 1924 when members of the Connecticut Tree Protective Association convened a meeting that would plant the seed of the organization that would ultimately revolutionize the tree care industry. It was this gathering that was to become the first of many annual conferences of the organization that has evolved into today’s International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). The history of modern arboriculture is largely the story of the development of ISA in the 20th century. And while such a history is not exclusively that of ISA and its predecessor organizations, there is little of significance in arboriculture that is not reflected in its publications since its inception in 1924.

ISA continues to be a dynamic medium through which arborists around the world share their experience and knowledge for the benefit of society. ISA is aligned on many fronts with other green organizations and is working hard to foster a better understanding of trees and tree care through research and the education of professionals as well as global efforts to inform tree care consumers.

Going Green for a Christmas Tree?

With the holidays rapidly approaching, I thought it would be the perfect time to give you some pointers for a “green” Christmas tree. Of course the two definitive green trees are a live tree with the bulb intact to plant in your yard when the holiday season closes, the other is an artificial tree that you can use year after year and then recycle when you’re finished with it. These days, the artificial trees are so lifelike that you sometimes have to touch and smell them to tell the difference.

If you choose to go live and not plant afterwards, there are recycling stations that will take your tree and turn them into mulch. You can also cut it up for a small outside fire to warm your buns! The good thing about Christmas trees is that they are planted every year to handle the volume of trees that are sold. So…this renewable resource is replaced year after year.

Another great idea is to take reclaimed wood and make it into your own tree that will last for years to come.

No matter which way you go with your Christmas tree, remember that the season is about being thankful, celebrating family and friends, giving back, making someone’s holiday cheerful when it otherwise might not be…but most of all…remember to keep the celebration in your heart all year! Life is truly about the right balance. 100% praise and thanksgiving every day!

Managing Emerald Ash Borer

Ever since the emerald ash borer swept the Midwest 20 years ago the persuit was on to stop these pests. Today not only do we have tools to fight this insect but we are developing better management techniques every day.

Treating ash trees has long been shown to be effective against emerald ash borer. Our specialized treatment is injected into the trunk of a tree and travels throughout the live parts of leaves and stems.

If an ash tree is left untreated there are direct costs as the tree dies like removal, replacement, and potential loss of property or life when branches break. Indirect costs include increased run off, loss of home and yard shade, and lower property values. It is also important to consider the sentimental value of specific trees when planted to honor a loved one.

Keeping trees alive allows communities to benefit from advances in emerald ash borer management. There is great promise for the future. Parasitoids may be able to lower the total number of emerald ash borer and reduce the number of ash trees they are able to kill.

Call and schedule a No-Cost Consultation with one of our six ISA certified arborists to assess the trees on your property and how best to maximize their health by letting the experts manage the destructive insects on your property.

2 Words…Tree Preservation

Extremes of snow, ice and wind, and worst of all, low, low temperatures can take their toll on your landscape. Damage to trees and shrubs is quite common and even turf and groundcovers are vulnerable. After last winter’s ice storm many clients asked us what can be done to prevent such severe damage again.  As in many other aspects of life, we follow the old adage that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. FERTILIZE  YOUR  TREES & SHRUBS Proper pruning and cabling (when necessary) reduces the damage caused by what a bad winter can throw at us.

Our arborists recommend pruning your trees during the winter when they are dormant. This prevents the spread of disease, helps the arborist with increased visibility for form development and disease/hazard detection, and minimizes shock to the tree because of leaf loss. As an added bonus, when the ground is frozen there is minimal damage to lawns, gardens or the forest floor. Even after doing everything possible to prevent winter damage it sometimes happens. Trees and shrubs that experience moderate storm damage can often make a full recovery over time. When damage occurs, remove broken limbs immediately, and have one of our certified arborists perform crown restoration pruning within one growing season. Our professional arborists also offer pre-winter assessments of your landscape to identify potential problems, and they are available to perform storm damage emergency work at any time.

Trees provide shade, beauty and privacy and are the anchors of a great landscape. McCullough’s has been providing tree service for over twenty years and always uses an environmentally sensitive approach. Your arborist will design a tree service and plant health care program that addresses the specific conditions of your landscape, your personal preferences and eco-sensibilities.

You may be the type of person who enjoys a day spent maintaining your property and only want to call tree professionals when absolutely necessary. For others, maintaining trees is an intimidating, time consuming chore. So, you simply opt to leave the entire task to the experts. Our certified arborists work hand-in-hand to tailor a solution for you.

Winter is one of the best times to prune trees! How do you tell if a branch is dead or alive from the ground? It’s much easier to decipher what areas of deciduous trees need tending to by a tree climber. They are properly trained to climb and see the best option for each tree. They can evaluate the limbs by seeing if tree buds are or are not present.

There are many proper ways to cut a tree, and arborists are trained to know how to safely climb, cut and create a balance all around so the tree stays healthy, and is esthetically pleasing for the landscape. When you aren’t sure how to shape the tree, mistakes can be made that actually cause harm to the tree and shape.

Trees that are too close to a structure can cause damage by growing into it or hang too far over. Sometimes it’s necessary to trim away limbs to clear space or remove the tree safely from the area.

If you have trees in need of pruning or if you're not sure if your trees need pruned, request an estimate and a McCullough’s Tree Expert will contact you!

What’s your favorite thing about spring? For me, it’s hearing the peepers for the very first time.

There’s a certain spot along the Wakatomika Creek where, every spring, the peepers find their voice. After a long, cold, snowy, dreary…need I go on, winter, I look forward to hearing their sweet chorus as they happily sing about warmer more pleasant weather that’s coming! Perhaps for you it’s the forsythia and dogwoods bursting forth in all their splendor or maybe it’s the sweet smell of grass. I have friends that look for the Robins to return with their signal that winter is over, others rake away the leaves in their landscaping looking for the daffodils and crocuses, whose heads have just popped through the ground and whose blooms sometimes have a dusting of the last snow of the season.

At McCullough’s Tree Service, this time of year signals our busy season and the chance to serve our clients who have become our regulars and the chance to serve the new clients who will soon become familiar faces in the McCullough Tree Service client family. Our team members are ready and have prepared our equipment to get the job done.

So, happy spring everyone and remember we’re here to take care of you. Don’t wait another minute, give us a call today.
